Can you read ebooks on Apple Watch?

Yes. WristTale officially supports Apple Watch for TXT novels, Markdown notes, vocabulary lists, and checklists. Import your files on iPhone and send them to the watch. Once Apple Watch confirms a book is saved, you can read offline without your iPhone nearby.

Install the Apple Watch reader

  1. Download WristTale from the App Store on your paired iPhone.
  2. If WristTale is missing on the watch, open the iPhone's Watch app → My Watch → Apps, find WristTale under Available Apps, and tap Install.
  3. Open WristTale once on Apple Watch to initialize it, then return to iPhone to import and send your books.

Send a book from iPhone to Apple Watch

  1. Import and preview: Add a .txt or .md file in WristTale on iPhone and check its chapter titles. For garbled text or missing chapters, see the import guide and TXT encoding converter.
  2. Choose the watch and chapters: Select Apple Watch from the book's send flow, choose the chapters you want, then tap Send.
  3. Wait for watch confirmation: Progress on iPhone means files are being sent; it does not mean the watch has saved them yet. Keep both devices nearby until Apple Watch confirms the book is saved.
  4. Read offline: Open WristTale on Apple Watch and find the book in your library. Once saved, it can be read without keeping your phone nearby or using an internet connection.

Reading on your wrist

The Apple Watch reading screen lets you:

  • Adjust the display: Change font size, line spacing, and reading theme. Scroll with the Digital Crown or touch.
  • Resume reading: Navigate chapters, add bookmarks, and save your reading position on the watch.
  • Use auto-scroll: Available on watchOS 11 or later. Manual reading works on watchOS 10.

TXT and Markdown work well for novels, study notes, checklists, and other text-first material. WristTale does not import EPUB or PDF directly; export readable TXT or Markdown text first.

Common questions

Why is my book missing on Apple Watch?

Check that WristTale is installed on the watch and has been opened once, and that the watch is paired with your iPhone. Do not treat the iPhone progress bar as confirmation that the book was saved. Wait for confirmation on the watch, then check its library. The sending guide has more troubleshooting steps.

Can I read without my iPhone nearby?

Yes. You need iPhone to import and send books; after Apple Watch confirms a book is saved, you can read that content offline on the watch.

Do I need a cellular Apple Watch or an internet connection to read?

No. WristTale reads saved books from the watch's local library, so reading them does not require cellular data or Wi-Fi. Check the watchOS version and App Store compatibility requirements when choosing a device.

Can an Android phone send books to Apple Watch?

No. Apple Watch needs its paired iPhone. Android phone users can choose a compatible Android watch or a Garmin watch.

Does WristTale work on Apple Watch Series 7?

Yes. WristTale has been tested on Apple Watch Series 7. Basic reading requires watchOS 10 or later; auto-scroll requires watchOS 11 or later.
